0000-00-00 00:00:00 49° 7.191' N 12° 20.199' W 18 242 1025 Full Main, MPS spinnaker - 7.2 110 Barometer continues to rise as Azores High expands to the northeast. 2006-07-08 08:13:00 48° 7.3' N 22° 37.86' W 34 254 1006 2 Reefs in Main, #4 Jib - 8.8 100 Warm front arrived as expected, winds building steadily and clocking to the West. Sustained winds over the last 12 hours of 35-40 knots, with Gusts to 48 knots. Barometer dropping steadily, low pressure system forming ahead of the warm front should move NE ahead of us.
0000-00-00 00:00:00 48° 10.26' N 27° 12.38' W 19 205 1019 Full Main and Genoa - 7.5 105 Wind Backing steadily to the south ahead of a warm front. Spinnaker starting to show signs of failure at repair again. Spinnaker down, Genoa up, still making good speed indirection of destination.
2006-07-07 02:25:00 48° 13.68' N 28° 32.8' W 11 250 1022 Full Main, MPS spinnaker - 5.1 110 Wind backing and light. Gybed to Starboard

2006-07-06 05:30:00 47° 14.048' N 31° 9.457' W 16 315 1020 Full Main, Genoa - 6.2 90 Wind is clocking and in creasing. Repair to Spinnaker is failing again. Take it down and raise main and Jib
2006-07-05 20:00:00 47° 0.88' N 32° 8.9' W 11 278 1019 MPS Spinnaker with no Main - 5.2 90 Wind clocked into the west and diminished substantially, as low as 9 Knots. Course is dead down wind and blanket effect of main on spinnaker collapses the latter.. Decided to drop main in favor of a more efficient spinnaker. Seems to be working for now. Boat speed pretty slow, hopefully wind will pick up over night. Sighted breaching whale feeding on crill.
2006-07-05 07:49:00 46° 27.048' N 33° 55.412' W 30 280 1016 #1 Reef in Main, #2 Jib - 8.5 70 Wind clocked to 285 mag. Gybed to Port. Have seen gusts to 48 knots, winds mostly in the low 30s. Set a new boat speed record, 14.5 knots, surfing down a wave.
2006-07-05 05:30:00 46° 26.167' N 33° 56.245' W 29 257 1015 #1 Reef in Main, #2 Jib - 8.2 115 Wind clocking quickly in last hour.
2006-07-04 20:00:00 46° 36.91' N 36° 16.78' W 31 231 1016 1st Reef in Main, #2 Jib - 8.5 100 Changed clocks ahead again, now just one time zone behind Greewich. Clocks currently at UTC +0. Wind building, sustained over 30 knots, gusts to 45. Expect winds to clock into the west and then northwest. Will ride the lift for a while before gybing to the north.
2006-07-04 07:50:00 46° 31.8' N 38° 29.5' W 28 226 1018 !st Reef in Main, #2 Jib - 8.7 110 Just passed 38.50 meridian - Half Way! Wind velocity up since last night, sustained close to 30 knots, gusts in the mid thirties. 1 reef in the main, genoa furled to #2, stomping along at 9 knots, straight down the rhumb line. First repair to spinnaker blew out last night, flew the Breakthrough spinnaker for a watch to repair the primary. More thorough repair seemed to hold up well in 20 knots of breeze.
2006-07-03 13:45:00 46° 18.43' N 42° 10.94' W 20 234 1020 Full Main, MPS spinnaker - 6.7 95 Wind backed back into the southwest as expected, gybed back onto starboard tack. Spinnaker is repaired and up; seems to be holding, for now.... we will see. Should be 1/2 there by nid day tomorrow. Current course is 095, we are headed for the barn!
2006-07-03 05:30:00 45° 26.25' N 43° 15.26' W 25 260 1019 Full Main and Genoa - 7 50 Oops. We blew out our primary spinnaker today in a round-up broach. We are in the process of tryting to repair it down below; with any luck we will be able to use it again. Looks like most of the upcoming route will be downwind so we really need it. Currently sailing a little higher reaching angles with a jib and still making good downwind VMG. Hoping for a southerly wind shift later today which will get us back on starboard gybe and get us headed a little more directly for Falmouth. Chased by a pod of small whales today that kept charging up our stern wave. Pretty amusing sight.
2006-07-02 20:30:00 44° 23.57' N 44° 6.38' W 20 265 1019 Full Main, MPS spinnaker - 7.5 55 Set MPS spinnaker a few hours ago on starboard gybe. We finally got the wind shift (into the west) that we were looking for. Gybed to port. Other gybe still favored but it is as well to be on the northern side of the next wind shift which we are expecting tomorrow. The dolphin shows continue to be amazing.
2006-07-02 06:20:00 44° 15.833' N 46° 19.111' W 23 220 1021 Full Main, Genoa - 8 105 Continuing along the 44th parallel, expecting a wind shift further to the west later today or tomorrow. Will gybe to the north on the shift, but expect to alter course to rhumb line late tomorrow if wind shift does not materialize. Wind pressure good, pushing boat along at 7.5 to 8.5 knots. Fog is back but the air is mild. Sea tempreature dropped quickly to 61 deg. foor a while, probably a cold eddy from the Labrador Current. Back to 69 deg. looking for more visibility as the day progresses.
2006-07-01 16:05:00 44° 11.15' N 48° 46.74' W 21 205 1023 Change to Genoa - 7.8 105 Boat is a little overpowered with Spinnaker and wind on the beam. True wind angle about 115 to starboard. Performance Polars show crossover of genoa / spinnaker efficiency at abou 105 deg. at this wind speed. Decided to drop spinnaker and hoist genoa. Will sacrifice a modest amount of speed for luss load on rig and rudder.
2006-07-01 12:03:00 44° 7.57' N 49° 29.129' W 19 206 1023 Full Main, MPS spinnaker - 8.3 100 Passed waypoint 44N/50W early this morning. Fog lifted with daybreak and sea temp. holding steady at 67. Looks like we skirted the southern tip of the Labrador Current; no icebergs in sight and low probability from here on. Holding course nominally 090 true but may edge northward as wind backs. Will review upcoming weather patterns to decide whether to maintain a southerly rhumb line course or to strike a new great circle course to the north from here. About 1850 miles to go, looking strong for an early finish.
2006-06-30 19:30:00 43° 47.71' N 52° 17.51' W 17 215 1025 Full Main, MPS spinnaker - 7.9 105 Clock changed to new time zone (GMT -2). Should be entering Labrador Current "watch zone" within a few hours. Sea temp. dropped quickly from 74 to 67 but seems to be holding. Sky clear overhead but dense fog at sea level; radar on. Wind holding steady at SW with occasional header. Speed is good and we are well ahead of schedule but there is plenty of water still ahead of us with the possibility of light winds into next week.
2006-06-30 10:00:00 43° 40.263' N 53° 52.847' W 16 230 1022 Full Main, MPS spinnaker - 7.8 105 Wind has been fresh from the SSW most of the past two days, allowing us to sail under spinnaker most of the time. Making good progress, will pass the 1/3 milestone today. Currently heading for a point about 360 miles North of our original first waypoint, still avoiding the high pressure system to the South. Riding a nice breeze sandwiched between the southern high and a low to the north. Wind generator is still on the blink, almost ready to chuck it overboard but have recalculated fuel capacity and consumption and it looks as though we will have enough to keep the batteries charged for the duration of the voyage. Increasing fog as we approach the Labrador Current (the iceberg highway). Both US and Canadian coast guards show ice well to the north and west. Even so, it will be a relief to get to 48W.
2006-06-28 23:05:00 43° 26.19' N 59° 32.53' W 16 202 1026 Full Main and Genoa 5.5 105 First beautiful night with no fog, clear moon and sky; excellent stars (good night for the Curious George book of stars--no kidding).
2006-06-28 14:20:00 43° 18' N 60° 51' W 15 195 1027 Full Main, MPS spinaker 6 105 438 miles from Manchester, approx. 146 nautical miles per day, 152 nautical miles in last 24 hours.
2006-06-28 03:30:00 43° 5.218' N 62° 24.743' W 13 205 1029 Full Main, MPS spinnaker - 6.5 95 Wind clocking to the West, Set MPS spinnaker, furl genoa. Probably worth .5 to 1.0 knots boat speed.
2006-06-27 17:39:00 42° 54.055' N 63° 54.373' W 13 178 1028 Full Main and Genoa 5.2 90 Whale siting/sounding (mother with calf) very close, starboard side. Continued fog. Wind generator still not performing--will need to investigate further.
2006-06-27 14:20:00 42° 52.445' N 64° 18.702' W 18 176 1028 Full Main, Genoa - 7.1 105 Low lying fog, clear overhead. 24 hour run 162 nautical miles. 2 day average 143 nm per day. Wind generator not working properly, need to cut electrical power consumption. Saw humpback whale astern
2006-06-26 07:42:00 42° 34.425' N 68° 0.703' W 18 184 1021 Full Main and Genoa - 7.4 100 24 Hour Run: 124 miles. Not bad considering slow start. Need to average 132 miles per day to make landfall within three weeks.
2006-06-26 07:42:00 42° 25.12' N 68° 56.301' W 17 183 1021 Full Main and Genoa - 7.1 100 Revise course to north to avoid expanding Azores high pressure system
